The Children’s Room Teen Performance Troupe has been on the road, performing their original skits and answering candid questions in middle schools, high schools, colleges, and social service agencies across Massachusetts. The teens bravely and honestly share their personal grief stories and experiences with their audiences.

So often kids hold feelings of grief deep inside, and their grief is unrecognized and unacknowledged. These teens reach out to others with the message that breaking this silence is redemptive and healing.

The Teen Performance Troupe is an integral part of The Children’s Room outreach and education effort in our communities, so that our message of hope and compassion reaches many more children in diverse neighborhoods and schools. For many children whose families cannot access bereavement services, the teen troupe brings empathy and validation.

The troupe performance calendar includes dates for Lexington, Plymouth, and Newton schools, Tufts and BC, and a bereavement center in Northampton. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about scheduling a performance, or read more about The Teen Performance Troupe.

We invite everyone to join us at the Belmont Hill School on June 6th for the final public performance of the season.

Thank you to the 350+ walkers who joined us, and to the many others who supported us from a distance! Our Memories Walk and 10th Anniversary Celebration on October 4th was such a meaningful and successful day. We enjoyed family, friends, inspiring words, sun (!) – and even a rainbow to bring the day to a wonderful conclusion.

There is still plenty of time to donate. The online teams and fundraising pages on Firstgiving at www.Firstgiving.com/childrensroom will remain up through the New Year. Since this is our 10th Anniversary, we hope people will keep on donating to teams and friends right through the end of the year — and spread the word that you can still create a new fundraising page and help the children in our program.

Thank you so much for the outpouring of support. We are deeply grateful!!

Check back soon for more reflections on the day and to see pictures.

Our Executive Director, Barbara Clarke, will be leaving The Children’s Room on July 31st. Barbara has been with The Children’s Room for almost three years, and has helped us enhance our community profile, professionalize our fundraising, and modernize our technological capabilities. We express our heartfelt appreciation for her inspired contributions.

21 July 2009

An important message from The Children’s Room

Dear Friend of The Children’s Room,

Like many families, businesses and non-profit groups today, our organization has been affected by the difficult economic climate. Despite these challenges, we remain deeply committed to fulfilling our mission of providing caring support to grieving children, teens and families.

The Board of Directors of The Children’s Room would like to share with you our recent difficult decision, arrived at in partnership with our Executive Director, Barbara Clarke. In order to focus our current financial resources on our core mission of supporting families through our program, we have determined — with Barbara — that Barbara will be leaving the organization effective Friday, July 31st.

As many of you know, Barbara has been with The Children’s Room for almost three years.
She took over at a difficult time in the organization’s history, and her resourceful efforts helped us enhance our profile in the community, professionalize and strengthen our fundraising and modernize our technological capabilities. We’d like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Barbara for her inspired contributions to the organization and deep commitment to grieving children and families.

As the Board works to restructure The Children’s Room, we want to assure you of our continued commitment to maintaining the vitality of our program with a remarkably able staff and devoted team of volunteers under the direction of Donna Sharff, Program Director.

In dealing with bereavement, we have learned how the power of peer support and community helps people deal with change and transition. With this in mind, we hope you will continue to support the mission and work of The Children’s Room at this challenging time.

If you have any questions or concerns about Barbara’s departure, we invite you to contact Judy Zabin, Board President, at 781-861-0956.

Meantime, please join the Board in sincerely thanking Barbara for her service to The Children’s Room, and wishing her all the best.

Best regards,

The Board of Directors
The Children’s Room

On Sunday, January 23 at 10 pm, The Children’s Room will be guests on the Jordan Rich radio show. We have been invited by the Lenny Zakim Fund, one of our supporters. Together with th Louis D. Brown Peace Institute we will be telling an audience in 38 states and Canada about the mission of The Children’s Room and how we help grieving families. We will also highlight an upcoming collaboration with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute to help families affected by homicide.

We are thrilled to have this opportunity to spend an hour with these great folks talking about how to help families in crisis. This show will be available on our website for listening a week or so afterwards.

About the Lenny Zakim Fund

The mission of The Lenny Zakim Fund is to identify, listen to, support and connect grassroots community organizations and programs operating “below the radar screen” of large charitable groups and government grants. The Lenny Zakim Fund provides assistance to those who demonstrate the will and potential to make a difference, but lack the necessary resources. As a reflection of Lenny Zakim’s personal ideals, The Fund is especially interested in supporting groups involved in constructive coalition building across race, religious and ethnic lines.

About the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute

The mission of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute is to create and support an environment where families can live in Peace and Unity. The Goals and Objectives are three fold:
(1.) Schools: To develop programs and activities that teach and instill the values of peace and enrich the lives of young people.
(2.) Families: To assist and empower survivors of homicide victims with tools that not only rebuild their lives but also their communities; through Education, Collaboration, and Policy Advocacy.
(3.) Community: To inform and educate the public about the causes and the consequences of violence on the individual, the family and the community, while transforming the community into an environment where young people are valued by adults and by their peers the for their peacemaking efforts.
