Memories That Move Us – Our annual Memories Walk was a wonderful day for our community, and we thank our many supporters for being part of our biggest walk ever! Please check back soon to see more photographs from the day, featuring walkers in bright green shirts. We will also be posting more news about how this event helped with our fall fundraising efforts to support The Children’s Room.

Going on a Family Vacation After a Death in the Family Parent Discussion, Sunday, May 1, 6:30 to 8:00 pm

With summer approaching, you might be thinking about a family vacation. After coping with a loss in your family you may decide to redefine your family vacation and make some changes. Others might find comfort in returning to a favorite place or activity. Do you stay with past traditions or do you try something new? How can you involve your children in these discussions and decisions? This interactive parent discussion will give you an opportunity to share your story, and learn from the experiences of other families.

The Parent Alumni Group (PAG) is an active group of “alumni” adults, who have been through our family-based support programs, and have remained connected to the mission of The Children’s Room. They meet regularly to support and give back to newly bereaved families in a variety of ways, including hosting regular discussion groups on topics experienced by grieving children and families.

The annual PAG Cocktail Party will take place on June 16th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm.

Remarriage, or Committing to a Serious Relationship after the Death of your Spouse Parent Discussion, Sunday, April 10, 6:00-7:30 pm

Are you thinking about making a more serious commitment to a new partner after the loss of your spouse? You might be planning to talk to your kids about changing your living arrangement or getting remarried. How do you balance your role as a single parent with a commitment to a new relationship? Children can come between you and your partner in the best of circumstances. How can you do this and do it well? Join this discussion to explore with other parents the possibilities amid the challenges.

Relationship Changes with Your In-Laws After the Loss of Your Spouse Parent Discussion, Sunday, March 13, 6:30 to 8:00 pm

Your relationship with your in-laws may change after the death of your spouse. Perhaps it’s a friendship that will stand on its own, or maybe it wasn’t a positive relationship before the loss. Your in-laws are your children’s family, and you will most likely feel it is your responsibility to keep your children connected to them. Sometimes that connection can be difficult. There may be feelings of guilt, or they may judge how you and your children are living your lives after the death. This discussion will explore expectations around family traditions, including holidays, vacations, and visits. Change is inevitable and difficult. Sometimes what feels best for you, may not be the best thing for your children. Come share your personal experiences, good and bad, and the ways your relationship is changing with your in-laws.

Dating After the Loss of Your Partner Parent Discussion, Sunday, February 6, 6:00-7:30 pm

Are you beginning to think about dating again after the loss of your spouse or partner?
It can be challenging to talk with your children about a new relationship. Perhaps you’re asking yourself: How do I get started? Is internet dating safe? Should I introduce my date to my children? There are so many difficult questions and so few easy answers. Talking with other parents will help you navigate tricky issues such as carving out some adult time as a single parent, and facing what may be a difficult emotional process for you and your children. Come and share with other parents as you begin to think about this new chapter in your life.

Your Changing Relationship with Your In-Laws – Sunday Night Discussion, May 2

How has your relationship with your in-laws changed after your spouse’s death? Was it a good relationship before the death? Have they continued to make you feel that you are and will continue to be a part of their family? Or perhaps it is too painful for them to remain in close contact. You and/or your children are a constant reminder of their beloved. You need to feel close to those who loved your spouse too. After all, they knew your spouse longer than you did, and have more stories to share with your children.

Our Parent Alumni Group is hosting a discussion group around this topic on Sunday, May 2, from 6:30-8:00 pm. Alumni parents, current parents, and waitlist parents are all welcome, as well as anyone interested in joining the discussion.

Drop-In Discussion Group – May 12

Our parent alumni group is hosting a monthly series of informal discussions on Wednesday evenings. The discussions are open to any parent or guardian of a family who has experienced the loss of a spouse or a child. We hope these discussion groups will be especially supportive for the adults in families on our waitlist.

Topics may include anything from how to answer your children’s questions, to how to ask for help from family and friends. Not only will you find sensitivity and kindness from this group, but you will also be meeting other parents who are struggling with the adjustment to the new reality of life without your loved ones.

We meet at the house in Arlington from 7:00-8:30 pm.

Please RSVP to kim@childrensroom.org to help us best prepare for the meeting. Light refreshments will be served. We apologize that we are not able to offer childcare at this time. We look forward to welcoming you to any or all of our drop-in discussions!

Helping Your Teenager Through Their Loss – Sunday Night Discussion, March 7

Our Parent Alumni Group is hosting a discussion group on Sunday, March 7, from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Please join us for an evening of conversation around the topic of helping your teenager through their loss. Alumni parents, current parents, and waitlist parents are all welcome, as well as anyone interested in joining the discussion around this topic.
