Memories That Move Us – Our annual Memories Walk was a wonderful day for our community, and we thank our many supporters for being part of our biggest walk ever! Please check back soon to see more photographs from the day, featuring walkers in bright green shirts. We will also be posting more news about how this event helped with our fall fundraising efforts to support The Children’s Room.

Community Support for Memories Walk Amazing

We had sunshine yesterday for the annual Memories Walk, but more importantly we were surrounded by familes, volunteers, and friends who came to support the mission and programs of The Children’s Room.

The community support was simply amazing. We would like to thank everyone who walked, donated, and sent words of encouragement. And we would like to give special thanks to our Sol Circle walkers, the Arlington Hockey Club, and Robert’s Birthday party.

Upcoming Workshop: Understanding the Challenges of Loss in Adolescents – May 22

For most, adolescence is a period of life defined by growth and new beginnings. Yet for many teens it can be a time marred by grief and turmoil. This workshop will explore how teens make sense of and negotiate between these two competing worlds. Social workers, counselors, teachers, parents, and any adult working with teens will learn tools and strategies to work with and support teens through all kinds of loss.

This workshop is scheduled for Saturday, May 22 from 9:30am-4:30pm at our house in Arlington. For more information and registration for this and our other three workshops (each focused on a different age group), please visit our Spring-Summer Workshop Series page.

Teens Share Personal Stories of Loss through Performance

The Children’s Room Teen Performance Troupe has been on the road, performing their original skits and answering candid questions in middle schools, high schools, colleges, and social service agencies across Massachusetts. The teens bravely and honestly share their personal grief stories and experiences with their audiences.

So often kids hold feelings of grief deep inside, and their grief is unrecognized and unacknowledged. These teens reach out to others with the message that breaking this silence is redemptive and healing.

The Teen Performance Troupe is an integral part of The Children’s Room outreach and education effort in our communities, so that our message of hope and compassion reaches many more children in diverse neighborhoods and schools. For many children whose families cannot access bereavement services, the teen troupe brings empathy and validation.

The troupe performance calendar includes dates for Lexington, Plymouth, and Newton schools, Tufts and BC, and a bereavement center in Northampton. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about scheduling a performance, or read more about The Teen Performance Troupe.

Helping Your Teenager Through Their Loss – Sunday Night Discussion, March 7

Our Parent Alumni Group is hosting a discussion group on Sunday, March 7, from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Please join us for an evening of conversation around the topic of helping your teenager through their loss. Alumni parents, current parents, and waitlist parents are all welcome, as well as anyone interested in joining the discussion around this topic.

Teen Performance Troupe Premiere

The Teen Performance Troupe has written an original show about grief in the lives of teens. Each of the performers is a teen who has experienced the death of a family member, and they have worked to incorporate their personal stories into an innovative performance.

The Children’s Room Teen Performance Troupe looks forward to sharing their opening show with a supportive and caring audience:

Memories Walk Shines in the Sun

Thank you to the 350+ walkers who joined us, and to the many others who supported us from a distance! Our Memories Walk and 10th Anniversary Celebration on October 4th was such a meaningful and successful day. We enjoyed family, friends, inspiring words, sun (!) – and even a rainbow to bring the day to a wonderful conclusion.

There is still plenty of time to donate. The online teams and fundraising pages on Firstgiving at www.Firstgiving.com/childrensroom will remain up through the New Year. Since this is our 10th Anniversary, we hope people will keep on donating to teams and friends right through the end of the year — and spread the word that you can still create a new fundraising page and help the children in our program.

Thank you so much for the outpouring of support. We are deeply grateful!!

Getting Through the Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One: Sunday Night Discussion – November 8

For parents and other adults who have lost a close loved one – family or friend, there are so many discussions, issues, and concerns that arise. There are topics that are difficult to discuss with people who have not experienced something similar.

The Children’s Room Parents Council, a group of program alumni who are dedicated to our mission and to the support of peers, is offering a Sunday Night Discussion Series to create a forum for these conversations. These discussions are open to the public, and there is no fee to attend. We just ask that you RSVP.

All discussion groups will meet from 6:30-8:00 at our house in Arlington. The next 2 topics in the series are:

Getting Through the Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One: November 8th
Holding on to traditions or letting go? How about creating “new” traditions? Come hear how others have found ways to get through some of the most difficult days and situations.

Dating and/or Remarriage After the Loss of a Spouse: January 10th
Listen to and discuss with others the complex issues around this decision — from finding the time to date, to bringing the children into the new relationship, to merging households.
