Spring-Summer Workshop Series 2010

Workshops are presented by Deborah Rivlin, Director of Education and Training.  Deborah has been a bereavement educator for over thirty years.

All of our workshops are open to the community, and continuing education credits are available for participants.

Each workshop has two scheduled dates:

March 6 | May 22

Teens in Transition: Understanding the Challenges of Loss in Adolescents. For most, adolescence is a period of life defined by growth and new beginnings. Yet for many teens it can be a time marred by grief and turmoil. This workshop will explore how teens make sense of and negotiate between these two competing worlds.  Social workers, counselors, teachers and any adult working with teens will learn tools and strategies to work with and support teens through all kinds of loss.

March 13 | July 19

“If we lost Uncle David, why don’t we go find him?”: Strategies for Talking with Young Children about Death, Dying and Loss. This interactive workshop will provide tools and strategies for working with young children around death, illness and other painful losses.  Participants will gain tips for working with and supporting both young children and their families through the grieving process.

March 20 | July 20

Fostering Resiliency in Children Coping with Death, Illness and other Losses. This workshop provides social workers, counselors, teachers and any adult working with children the tools and  strategies to support children through all kinds of loss. Loss will be discussed not only as a crisis, but as an opportunity to develop and strengthen coping skills that will serve children throughout their lifetime.

April 3 | July 21

Supporting Young Adults Coping with Loss. It has been estimated that 22 – 30% of traditionally-aged college students have experienced the death of a family member or friend within the last year. This workshop, intended for college and university counseling center staff and other providers working with young adult populations, will explore the intersection of typical young adult developmental issues and the experience of bereavement.

All workshops will be held 9:30 – 4:30 at The Children’s Room, 1210 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington. Space is limited so please register early.
