Creating Our Garden
Project Background
Two years ago, The Children’s Room received a grant from COGdesign, a local non-profit that brings together landscapers, designers etc to improve the natural, open spaces of non-profits and public spaces. COGdesign introduced us to their volunteer designer David McCoy, owner of Geographia Landscape Design who met with us many times and created a wonderful vision to transform our external landscape to reflect our mission.
The resulting design is inspirational and thoughtful and will bring year round beauty to our site.
Before we could implement the design, we needed to address a significant structural problem. The crumbling retaining wall around our property had to be torn down and completely replaced. The new wall uses old and new stone in a style that is consistent with our historic old house. The restructuring of the wall was made possible by a generous grant from The Smith Family Foundation and the work of Fagan and Sons.
When the wall was finished, we were ready to move forward with the garden installation.
COGdesign approached A Yard & A Half, a local landscaping construction company about implementing our vision. We are fortunate that A Yard & A Half has offered their talents to implement the first phase of the design: the front yard. They prepared the ground by grading and making the soil “shovel ready” and installed a new walkway that starts at the sidewalk and winds its way into our new garden. Autowater Irrigation generously donated the sprinkler system that will keep our garden properly hydrated.
Phase Two
As we enjoy the plantings in our front yard, we look forward to the next phase in our project – two important additions to the existing garden:
Mulch! We need to cover our tender roots to keep in moisture and discourage weeds.
Arbor/Trellis marks a path. We will install a trellis arch that will connect the larger lawn to a cozier seating garden area.
