Community in Action: Local Residents Malinda Dublin and Crissy Straub Coach Our 2017 Boston Marathon Team

Marathon Coaches Crissy Straub (left) and Malinda Dublin on a race weekend in Bermuda We're pleased to share that Lexington resident Crissy Straub and Arlington resident Malinda Dublin have volunteered their time to coach The Children’s Room’s 2017 Boston Marathon team. Crissy and Malinda are lifelong friends and running partners who have run a combined total of 49 marathons to date. In 2015, they decided to form their unique blend of friendship and running experience into a business, MC Coaching, which specifically coaches marathon runners who are running to benefit a charity. This is the second year in a row that MC Coaching has generously volunteered to train and motivate our Boston Marathon team as they fundraise and promote awareness for The Children’s Room. “Being able to coach The Children's Room ‘Miles and Memories’ Boston Marathon team is a truly meaningful, fulfilling way for me to support an organization that does such important and necessary work. It's a way to show others that running can go beyond personal gains. Running can literally help change people's lives, not only your own,” says Crissy. “For me to be able to help other people while doing an activity I love is a win-win situation. Running beyond oneself is what every ‘Miles and Memories’ team member does. They run for their goal to finish Boston Marathon and to raise money for an organization that helps so many people. It really is a way to pay it forward.” Malinda says, “I am motivated to coach the team because I know that the marathon fundraising dollars will allow TCR to continue the amazing work they do, and because I believe that a supported runner is happier, healthier and more successful runner [...]

Meet Our 2017 Boston Marathon Team: Part 1

We are so proud of our team of Boston Marathon runners, each of whom has a unique story full of personal connections to TCR and strong motivations for running. In order to honor their efforts, we’re going to introduce our team members four at a time. We hope you’ll check back soon to learn more about James O’Leary, Shane Richardson, John Shea, and Antonio Willis-Berry. Meanwhile, we are proud to introduce you to Alex Ebling, John Fleming, Jared Huber, and Tim O’Brien. Alex Ebling Alex is a Wellesley resident and a teacher at Newton Country Day School. We are thankful to have him on our team as he aims to accomplish a lifelong personal goal: running the Boston Marathon. Alex runs in memory of his cousin, Sophia, who died when she was one year old. Alex’s aunt and uncle, and his cousin, Isabelle, were served by peer support groups at The Children’s Room after Sophia’s death. Running this year’s marathon is Alex’s way of showing his appreciation for the support his family members received. Alex said, “It is truly an honor to be able to run for The Children’s Room in honor of my aunt, uncle, Isabelle, and particularly Sophia.” John Fleming John Fleming is a resident of Woburn and a teacher and coach at Winchester High School. We are grateful to have John’s positive energy on our team for the second year in a row—this is his second consecutive Boston Marathon for TCR! As a teacher and coach, John is motivated to run by his students and their families. “As a teacher at Winchester High School, I have seen a tremendous amount of loss during the last few years—students, siblings of current students, recent graduates, and parents of students,” [...]

Meet Our Marathon Team: Part 2

We are so proud of our team of Boston Marathon runners, each of whom has a unique story full of personal connections to TCR and strong motivations for running. We hope you took some time to read about the other three members of this year’s marathon team: Kerri Conneely, John Fleming, and Deana Hickey. Meanwhile, we are proud to introduce you to the rest of our team: Lauren Ruffing, John Shea, and Cat Steckbeck. Lauren Ruffing We’re thrilled to have Lauren Ruffing on our marathon team once again this year. Lauren, a resident of North Attleboro, is running her second Boston Marathon on behalf of TCR. We are deeply grateful to her for taking on this commitment of time and energy on our behalf for a second time. Lauren’s relationship with TCR began in 2014, when her brother Rich joined the TCR marathon team to run in memory of their mother, Tricia. Lauren ran the marathon for us the following year, and she is once again running in memory of her mother. “I’m running my second Boston Marathon to thank her,” Lauren said. “On any run I want to quit, I remind myself that she never gave up, not once, and she did that for me and for her family.” John Shea John Shea, a resident of Needham, is running his first Boston Marathon to support TCR, but he is no stranger to this challenge—the 2016 Boston Marathon represents John’s thirteenth marathon overall! In addition to running the Boston Marathon six times, he’s also run the Chicago Marathon twice, the New York Marathon three times, and the Marine Corps Marathon once. His running experience and his passion are assets to our team. John’s relationship with TCR began in [...]

Meet Our Marathon Team: Part 1

We are so proud of our team of Boston Marathon runners, each of whom has a unique story full of personal connections to TCR and strong motivations for running. In order to honor their efforts, we're going to be introducing our team members 3 at a time. We hope you'll check back soon to learn more about Lauren Ruffing, John Shea, and Cat Steckbeck. Meanwhile, we are proud to introduce you to Kerri Conneely, John Fleming, and Deana Hickey. Kerri Conneely Arlington native and resident Kerri Conneely has been a longtime friend and supporter of TCR. Kerri’s husband, Marty, has run the Boston Marathon for TCR, but this year, it’s Kerri who has so generously agreed to be a member of our team. Kerri’s relationship with TCR began in 2005, when Marty decided to run the Boston Marathon to support a local charity. He had received a clean bill of health after two years in treatment for cancer and wanted to give back to the community. The Conneelys were introduced to TCR by local realtor, Steve McKenna, and as soon as they came to our center, Kerri knew that this was their cause. “TCR was a place we knew we wanted to help prosper, to continue their journey for supporting grieving children," said Kerri. “This year I am running this Boston Marathon because I understand that TCR is a crucial resource for families who were not as lucky as we were to survive an encounter with cancer. I am also running in memory of several of my family members and friends who have died,” she said. “I hope to raise $7,500 and a great deal of awareness for this organization and the vital work it does for the children and [...]
