We’re honored to announce that Governor Maura Healey has officially proclaimed November as Children’s and Teens’ Grief Awareness Month in Massachusetts! This important recognition brings essential attention to the experiences of grieving children and teens and highlights the need for compassionate, accessible community support across the Commonwealth.

In Massachusetts alone, over 102,000 children will experience the death of a sibling or parent by the age of 18. These young people often navigate feelings of isolation, confusion, and sadness—challenges that can significantly impact their emotional, social, and academic lives. With the support of this proclamation, our goal at The Children’s Room is to raise awareness, share resources, and foster environments that help young people feel seen, understood, and supported.

TCR Initiatives for Children’s and Teens’ Grief Awareness Month

Throughout November, TCR will be leading initiatives across schools and communities to raise awareness and provide resources for children, teens, families, and educators in Massachusetts. Here’s how we’re working to support young people in navigating grief:

  • CTGAM Awareness Events: TCR is partnering with schools and community centers to create spaces for young people to talk about grief and express their experiences. These programs will include blue heart displays, classroom discussions, and supportive activities that allow children and teens to engage in conversations about loss in safe, familiar environments.
  • Flip the Script Campaign: TCR is proud to participate in the National Alliance for Grieving Children’s Flip the Script campaign. This social media initiative encourages individuals and organizations to share stories that challenge misconceptions about grief. Through Flip the Script, we aim to break down stigmas surrounding grief and highlight the importance of community support. We invite you to join the conversation on social media by sharing your own stories or messages of support for grieving children and teens.

Join Us in Building a Supportive Community

Governor Healey’s proclamation and our month-long initiatives are reminders of our commitment to ensuring that no child, teen, or family has to grieve alone. By raising awareness and providing accessible resources, we can create a Massachusetts where young people who are grieving feel acknowledged and supported.

We invite you to stand with us throughout Children’s and Teens’ Grief Awareness Month. Whether by participating in Flip the Script, wearing blue to show support, or sharing resources within your own communities, you can make a difference in the lives of grieving young people. Let’s make this month a time of connection, understanding, and hope for grieving children and teens.
