At The Children’s Room, diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just guiding principles—they are embedded in everything we do. When Kim Cayer, TCR’s Philanthropy Director, joined LeadBoston, it became an opportunity to deepen her understanding of equity and leadership while fostering connections that continue to shape her work at TCR.

“LeadBoston reminded me of the importance of using my voice to create change, both personally and professionally,” Kim shares. Introduced to the program by Executive Director Jon Gay, a LeadBoston alum himself, Kim was drawn to the cohort’s diversity and its promise of learning alongside individuals from a wide array of backgrounds.

Expanding Perspectives

Each program day tackled a critical issue facing Boston—housing, healthcare, transportation, and immigration—pushing Kim to challenge her assumptions and reflect on her role in fostering equity.

“We explored our identities as cultural beings, learned to navigate difficult conversations, and were encouraged to lean into discomfort and embrace ambiguity,” Kim explains. These lessons resonated with her work at TCR, where building trust and understanding is essential to supporting grieving families.

Through this experience, Kim brought fresh ideas and conversations back to her colleagues, sparking discussions that have strengthened TCR’s organizational culture. “We’re always learning and growing as a team, and this program reinforced the value of listening deeply and creating space for diverse perspectives.”

Building Connections That Matter

The relationships Kim formed through LeadBoston were equally transformative. “The cohort’s diversity—across gender, race, class, and industries—allowed me to connect with people and organizations I wouldn’t have met otherwise,” Kim says.

These new connections have already expanded awareness of TCR’s mission and opened doors for potential partnerships. “One introduction or conversation can have a ripple effect,” she adds. “It’s been incredible to see how this program has helped bring more visibility to the work we do.”

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on her LeadBoston experience, Kim encourages others to consider programs like it. “It’s a chance to step outside your day-to-day, listen from a different lens, and challenge yourself to think differently,” she says.

For Kim, the lessons and connections from LeadBoston have strengthened TCR’s ability to ensure that no child, teen, or family grieves alone. “I’m grateful for the chance to bring what I’ve learned back to TCR and to continue growing with this incredible community,” she shares.
