More Than a Game: TCR Teens Share a Special Bruins Night, Thanks to Highland Street Foundation
The energy inside TD Garden was electric—fans on their feet and the sound of skates cutting across the ice. For 15 teens from The Children’s Room, this wasn’t just a night out. It was a chance to be part of something bigger.
Through the generous support of the Highland Street Foundation, our monthly Teen Event brought teens together for an unforgettable experience, watching the Boston Bruins play live. For some, it was their first-ever professional hockey game—a moment filled with excitement, connection, and the thrill of being in the crowd.
Finding Connection Beyond Words
Grief can feel isolating, especially for teens. But in spaces like this—surrounded by peers who just get it—grief isn’t the center of the conversation. The focus is on shared experiences, small moments of joy, and simply being together.
“These events are so fun! It’s not really focused on people dying—it’s more about being with others just knowing they have gone through the same things as you,” shared one teen.
That’s what makes these monthly events so meaningful. They offer connection without expectation, a chance for teens to build friendships naturally beyond structured support groups.
A Night of Excitement and Team Spirit
The night at TD Garden was filled with excitement, energy, and plenty of Bruins spirit. The teens cheered, gasped, and enjoyed the snacks, fully immersed in the action. The roar of the crowd, the speed of the players on the ice—it was a night to just be in the moment and with each other.
Watching the Bruins, something else became clear: hockey is a team sport, built on trust, resilience, and having each other’s backs. In many ways, that’s what TCR’s teen program is about, too—finding support, sticking together, and knowing you don’t have to face tough moments alone.
This night wouldn’t have been possible without the Highland Street Foundation, whose generosity provided the Bruins tickets and made this experience a reality. Their commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for youth ensures that teens at TCR continue to have spaces where they can connect, have fun, and feel supported in ways that go beyond grief.
Why These Moments Matter
At The Children’s Room, we know that grief support isn’t just about conversations—it’s about experiences that remind teens they are more than their loss. Spaces where they can laugh, cheer, and feel like any other teenager are just as important as the spaces where they share their grief.
By partnering with organizations like the Highland Street Foundation, we’re able to create more opportunities for connection, belonging, and support for grieving teens. Their generosity helps ensure that these moments—of excitement, of joy, of simply being—continue to happen.
