Arlington Select Board Proclaims November as Children’s and Teens’ Grief Awareness Month

On November 3, 2025, the Arlington Select Board officially proclaimed November as Children’s and Teens’ Grief Awareness Month and November 20, 2025, as Children’s and Teens’ Grief Awareness Day in the Town of Arlington— home of The Children’s Room.

The proclamation invites residents, schools, and community organizations to come together in fostering compassion and understanding for children, teens, and families who are grieving. It reflects Arlington’s ongoing commitment to building a community where grief is recognized, validated, and met with care.

During the Select Board meeting at Arlington Town Hall, members reflected on TCR’s lasting impact, both locally and across the Commonwealth.

“For families who have turned to The Children’s Room, it’s been an incredible resource,” said Select Board Member John V. Hurd. “To have it right here in our community, led by such talented and dedicated people, is truly a gift. What’s even more inspiring is seeing so many young people who once participated come back to volunteer and support others going through the same thing.”

Select Board Chair Diane Mahon also shared a heartfelt reflection, recalling her first encounter with The Children’s Room in the late 1990s, before it found its permanent home in Arlington.

“Every time I see what The Children’s Room has accomplished, it makes me smile,” she said. “It brings me back to a time of grief, but also to what I learned years ago that even in sadness, there’s still happiness around you.”

For nearly three decades, The Children’s Room has provided grief support for children, teens, and families through peer-based programs, school and community partnerships, and professional education. Though its reach now extends to more than 80 Massachusetts communities, TCR’s roots remain deeply planted in Arlington.

We are profoundly grateful to the Town of Arlington for its continued partnership and recognition. This proclamation not only honors our work but also celebrates the strength and compassion of a community that has supported TCR’s mission from the very beginning. Arlington has long been the home of The Children’s Room, and it continues to be the heart that sustains our work today.
