This annual observance for survivors of homicide victims began yesterday, November 20th, and extends until December 20th.

During the awareness month, survivors across the state are provided with many opportunities to honor the memories of the loved ones, reflect on their journey as survivors of homicide victims, connect with other survivors and needed services, and learn more about the Massachusetts Victim’s Rights Movement and ways they can get involved.

The month is also a great opportunity for others to learn from homicide survivors on how we as a community can best support them and get involved in violence prevention, peacemaking, and the restorative and social justice movement.

To learn more about this awareness month and to view the complete calendar of activities, visit the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute SHVAM page. There you will find a 2012 SHVAM Toolkit to download, as well as a calendar of activities and more event materials.

The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute is a unique organization in the city of Boston that assists and supports the families of homicide victims. Through their family programs, they prepare families and young people to deal with trauma and grief, build non-violence and conflict resolution skills, and commit to restorative justice and sustainable peace in our communities.
