About Heroic Journey
Heroic Journey is a special program for your High School teens ages 14-18 that have experienced the death of a loved one. Thanks to the New York Life Foundation, a range of partial to full tuition scholarships are awarded to every student dependent on need. With 7 years under our belt, this is a proven program and you can be assured that the students/families will thank you upon completion.
Thanks to the Alenson Family, Outward Bound can offer full-tuition scholarhips to qualified teens involved with The Childrens Room. Scholarships are limited and are awarded to teens accepted on to course by the Colorado Outward Bound School .
I, with the help of others, created the first Heroic Journey in 2006 in honor of my sister, grandmother (murdered), and father who died before I turned 15. After I returned from my 78 Day Outward Bound Semester course in 2002 I was inspired to create something with meaning. It took me more than three years to get it going, but thanks to my friends at Outward Bound we made it happen. Now it’s grown into a national program.

More about Heroic Journey
Heroic Journey, Outward Bound for grieving teens has served more than 550 teens, ages 14-18, since 2006. We combine our challenge based curriculum with peer support model inspired by the nationally/internationally respected Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon https://www.dougy.org/ and the Companioning Model created by nationally/internationally respected grief educator, Dr. Alan Wolfelthttps://www.centerforloss.com/companioning-philosophy/ .
Both models honor the griever and see grief as a natural response to death and not something to be treated or diagnosed. With that said, Heroic Journey is 100% an Outward Bound experience, but with some added relevant activities, instructor training, and an approach that creates a safe place for teens to grieve and mourn together while they travel through some of the most beautiful places in the country. I invite you to call me to learn more about this.
There are lot of grief camps today. Like a grief camp, teens normalize, make friends, participate in grief support group activities, and have fun. Unlike camps, Outward Bound is focused on personal growth through wilderness adventure challenge. For example, on day 4 of 7, we climb a 14,000 foot peak and dedicated our journey to our person that died and/or a person a live. I have some great stories I can share with you.
