TCR Board of Directors

The Board of Directors for The Children’s Room appointed Newton resident Blyth Lord as its newest member.  Based in Arlington, The Children’s Room (TCR) supports grieving children, teens and families.  Executive Director Donna Smith Sharff is confident Lord will extend the work of the Board, “Blyth is a passionate advocate for grieving families and her personal experience as a social entrepreneur and bereaved parent makes her especially qualified to serve on our board. We are so fortunate to have her on our team.”

Lord has volunteered for three years, and “absolutely love

[s] it!  Everyone is special and the process is so uniquely powerful and intense.  As a bereaved parent, I am especially able to see the impact TCR has had on the families it serves.”  Lord’s 2-year-old daughter, Cameron, died of Tay-Sachs disease.  In addition to her work with The Children’s Room, Lord is President of the Courageous Parents Network, Executive Director of the Cameron and Hayden Lord Foundation, and the producer of the “Parenting Children with Life-Limiting Illness” video.  Thrilled by her Board appointment, Lord adds, “I joined the Board because I deeply believe in the mission of TCR and want to promote and sustain its important work, including broadening its educational materials and resources to families.”

The Children’s Room began in 1993, operating as a subset of Hospice West in Waltham, MA, before opening as an independent, non-profit center in 1999.  Twenty years since its inception, TCR has grown to be the largest independent 501(c)3 organization in Massachusetts supporting grieving children, teens and families.  Each program offered by TCR is built around their guiding principles: grief is a natural and healthy response to death; everyone experiences grief in a unique way; and being with others who have experienced a death reduces isolation and promotes both hope and healing.  The Children’s Room provides facilitated peer-support groups for families and schools, educational programs for professionals as well as resources and referrals to grieving families. Their reach now extends to over 80 communities across Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.
