My name is Becca Harris and I am the new development assistant at The Children’s Room. I am an Arlington native and a proud member of the AHS graduating class of 2008. I was fortunate to continue my education at Southern New Hampshire University where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Events Management. During my time at SNHU I worked in the community service office and was able to work with different non-profits, which helped grow my passion to work in the non-profit sector after college.
When I graduated in May I started applying to event and fundraising jobs at a variety of non-profits in the Boston area. When I saw the posting for the development assistant job at TCR I knew I had to apply. As an AHS alum I had seen the Teen Troupe perform and had classmates that were served over the years. I knew the work that TCR was doing would be a great match for my passion to work for a cause and begin my career as an event planner and fundraiser.
I started at TCR the last week in July and have enjoyed every moment of it. I never expected to feel so needed in my role. The people I work with are so kind-hearted and full of passion for the people we serve and I feel honored to be apart of it.
As the development assistant I am responsible for processing donations and assisting with TCR’s development projects and events. Our main focus the last few months has been the 10th Annual Memories Walk. I have helped with getting sponsors, sending out mailings, planning the kick-off event, and processing donations.
As the day of the Memories Walk approached, I was not sure what to expect. Once Sunday the 6th came I realized this walk was much more than a fundraising walk. The Walk gives families the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the loved ones they have lost with a supportive group around them. I was most impressed that over 200 people still came out to walk in the pouring rain, and I think that speaks to how much this event means to everyone involved.
I have learned so much in the few months I have been here, and I look forward to helping The Children’s Room reach our development goals for the future.
