Early this August, The Children’s Room welcomed a group of students from Tufts University for a special visit focused on therapeutic space planning. This engaging session, led by Laurie Moskowitz-Corrois, Associate Program Director for Family and Expressive Arts at TCR, offered a deep dive into the profound impact of creating therapeutic environments that foster sensitivity and self-reflection.

The workshop began with Laurie’s insightful presentation on the value of therapeutic space planning. She emphasized how thoughtfully designed spaces can profoundly influence personal and communal well-being. The core of her message was about looking within oneself to enhance sensitivity towards others, underscoring the importance of self-reflection in creating environments that promote empathy and value acknowledgment.

One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the concept of self-reflection as a foundation for designing therapeutic spaces. Laurie explained that to understand and value others truly, one must engage in honest and non-judgmental self-reflection. This process involves recognizing and appreciating our own experiences and emotions, enabling us to create genuinely supportive and empathetic spaces.

The session included a hands-on activity where students explored various aspects of therapeutic space planning. Participants were encouraged to reflect on how different elements—layout, colors, and materials—can influence emotional and psychological responses. They discussed how creating spaces that are sensitive to the needs of individuals can lead to environments that not only support healing but also foster a more profound sense of connection and understanding.

Therapeutic space planning is more than just about aesthetics; it’s about crafting environments that align with and support emotional and psychological needs. It involves designing spaces that promote reflection, sensitivity, and acknowledgment of each person’s unique experiences and feelings. By focusing on these elements, we can create nurturing, supportive settings conducive to growth and healing.

At The Children’s Room, we are committed to incorporating these principles into our spaces, ensuring that every environment we create is designed with care and intentionality. We were delighted to share this knowledge with the Tufts University students. We look forward to how these future professionals will apply these concepts in their work.
