Last year, I joined The Children’s Room as a volunteer group facilitator for the Sunday groups with 1st and 2nd graders. Spending time with these kids and helping guide them by guiding the group activities opened my eyes to the profound impact TCR has on the families it serves.
Reflecting on my own experiences with grief during my teenage and early adult years, I’ve encountered various forms of support, especially in my own experience of loss after my brother. Alex died in 2015. However, none have touched me as profoundly as TCR’s genuine care and purpose, anchored deeply in its sense of community and finding people you can be with and who gets you. Witnessing firsthand how this organization goes the extra mile to support families in such thoughtful ways has solidified my belief in their essential mission.
That’s why I’ve decided to take on the 128th Boston Marathon to support The Children’s Room in memory of my beloved brother, Alex. Though I’m not originally from New England, I vividly remember watching the Boston Marathon for the first time when my Aunt ran it when I was just six. After living in Boston for five years, I’ve cheered on friends, supported them through training, and even volunteered in the medical tent last year, which gave me a glimpse into the immense effort of making this event so unique.
I’m deeply aware of the pressing need to normalize conversations about grief, and TCR is already doing incredible work in providing support to grieving families while also educating and raising awareness in the community. My aim is not only to raise funds but also to shine a light on their exceptional efforts and their incredible impact on the lives of children and families.
