Supporting Grieving Families, Together: Community Partnerships in Action

At The Children’s Room, we know that grief doesn’t exist in a vacuum. The kind of support children, teens, and families need after a death often begins with a caring professional—someone who recognizes the need, opens a door, and makes the connection.

We’re fortunate to work alongside organizations like Boston Children’s Hospital and Samaritans, whose teams regularly help families take that first step toward ongoing grief support. Though each organization works in a distinct space in pediatric healthcare and suicide prevention, we’re aligned in something more profound: the belief that no one should feel alone in their grief, and that coordinated care leads to stronger outcomes for families.

At Boston Children’s Hospital, clinicians and mental health providers refer families to TCR after the death of a child or sibling. These referrals are grounded in trust, often happening during some of the most difficult and disorienting moments families face. This past year, our partnership deepened through the co-facilitation of our Parenting While Grieving series, a program that provides strategies and tools for parents and caregivers navigating their child or teen’s grief. Working with BCH staff has allowed us to support families more holistically, combining our strengths and offering continuity of care.

With Samaritans, families affected by suicide are connected to resources and care grounded in empathy and dignity. Their team often refers families to TCR when they feel ready, ensuring they’re not navigating the ripple effects of suicide-related loss alone. Last fall, we were honored to collaborate with Samaritans on a special Family Night event during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The evening brought together families from both organizations for creative expression, memory-making activities, and community building, offering space for connection, meaning, and comfort.

These partnerships are rooted in relationships that have been built over time and strengthened by shared values. Our collaboration works because there’s trust—not only in the work, but in each other. Whether through referrals, co-facilitated programming, or shared events, we are proud to work together to support families in meaningful, compassionate ways.

We’re grateful to Boston Children’s Hospital and Samaritans for their continued partnership and shared commitment to grief-informed care.
