The National Alliance for Children’s Grief (NACG) has released a campaign to bring attention to the needs of children and teens who are grieving the death of a loved one or close family member. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and provide education and resources for those looking to support grieving children.

Every year, millions of children in the United States lose a parent or sibling. Recent data from Judi’s House/JAG Institute’s Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM) reveals a significant increase in bereaved children since 2020, a trend exacerbated by the global pandemic. The 2024 CBEM results show that the number of children expected to experience such a loss by adulthood has risen in 45 states compared to the previous year. In Massachusetts alone, 1 in 13 children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18. This statistic underscores the urgent need for community support. While grief can be isolating, with the right support and understanding, children can navigate their grief in a healthier way.

The NACG, a large national alliance of which The Children’s Room is proud to be a part, is dedicated to creating a world where no child grieves alone. Through this campaign, they hope to educate the public on the importance of supporting grieving children and provide the necessary resources to those willing to help.

Grief can be especially challenging for young children who may not fully understand their emotions. It’s crucial for adults, caregivers, and the community to come together to support these children.
